Content of Workshop:
The course focuses on theoretical economic models of professional sports leagues where owners of clubs in the league make decisions on a number of variables, typically aware that their decisions may impact on other clubs in the league; thus there is strategic interaction between clubs and game-theoretic ideas are often the base for the models.
Specific league models are distinguished by their North American or European orientation (the former facing little competition for playing talent from other leagues, the latter the opposite), by the objectives of their club owners (profit maximizers, win maximizers, fan welfare maximizers, utility maximizers, benefactors) and perhaps by their policy focus (revenue sharing, salary caps most commonly). The course will cover a variety of such models.
