Christian Eggenberger has successfully defended his dissertation titled «Specificity of Skill Bundles: The Effects on Wages, Mobility and Employability». In his thesis, he examined the consequences of investing in more specific vs. investing in more general human capital on workers’ careers. He developed a new measurement of human capital specificity that considers how single skills are combined in a training program. His results show that the degree of specificity of occupational training varies substantially across training programs. Examining workers’ careers, for example after trade shocks or involuntary separations, he finds a pronounced trade-off between investing in specific vs. general skill bundles for workers’ short- and long-term labor market outcomes.»
