How should a new CEO go about building a high-performing top leadership team? Together with Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari, Dr Marianna Zangrillo and Prof Keil address this question in their new article in MIT Sloan Management Review. They develop a four-step framework that helps new CEOs to take the needed steps to address in advance the inherent tension between collaboration and competition.
The article suggests that leaders should start from
1. defining a clear strategic vision,
2. derive a leadership approach from that vision,
3. select the team with the vision and leadership approach in mind, and then
4. establish behavioral norms that shape the right team behavior.
Building a high-performance leadership team is more than just a one-off task. It's a journey that requires continuous monitoring, adaptation, and steering over time.
